With 2011 drawing to the end, Fourth Hospitality have been reviewing the year. Success's monthly workshops have been well attended with more than 300 customers attending. The Talent Retention and Pension seminars have helped Fourth customers learn more about the challenges facing the hospitality industry.

2012 promises to be bigger and better with the re-arranged Tronc and HMRC seminar taking place in February as well as metrics and management figures workshops already scheduled for January. Furthermore Fourth will begin running these workshop across the country to ensure all clients have access to learn more about the solutions they are using.

Fourth welcome feedback and suggestions on what topics should be focused on; whether it is a workshop to share information and ideas across different business or a webinar specific to your team.

Fourth would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New year and look forward to working with you for a successful 2012.

" We found the workshop very productive and useful in re-aligning some of the functions and processes that had lost their course overtime.

I must say your product knowledge on fnb manager is excellent and I was very impressed with the hands-on FnB skills you displayed.

We have taken on board your recommendations and look forward to continue working with you to make better and effective use of fnb manager in our business. "

Media reports of another bitterly cold winter, dustings of snow already reported at Scottish ski resorts and local authorities stockpiling grit, what can employers do to try and avoid being caught out when bad weather arrives?

Employers need to understand their rights and obligations where employees:

  • are unable to get into work due to the bad weather; or
  • they may be able to get into work, but have to take the day off due to school/nursery closure.

Generally, employers will be particularly concerned with whether they have to pay employees who fail to get into work in such circumstances?

As a starting point, an employer will have to consider the employee's contract of employment. Employers require authority to withhold pay unless the employee's absence is unauthorised. Now is an ideal time to review employment contracts to clarify whether absence resulting from bad weather is authorised or not. Employers must, however, consult employment specialists to ensure that any changes do not impede on employees' statutory rights such as unlawful deduction of wages.

For alternative suggestions to withholding pay and general advice for communicating with employees during bad weather please see Shoosmiths' article or contact Kelly Harvey. on 03700 865630 or via email.

Hello, I'm Caroline Ellis and I have been at fourth hospitality since 2008.

Before joining fourth, I spent 12 years managing nightclubs, a jazz club, a hotel and pubs after gaining a degree in hospitality management. This experience of front line hospitality has given me an empathy with our customers and the challenges they face, so our focus is always to provide the highest standard of customer service whilst ensuring issues are resolved as quickly as possible.

I have recently been promoted to people system Service Manager and look after a great team of Account Executives dedicated to first line support for our people system customers. I work closely with a number of other departments in the business, such as Relationship Managers, System Support and Projects, to improve processes, efficiency and ultimately the customer experience.

I am excited about the challenges ahead of me, such as ensuring that my team has the expert knowledge required to support our customers on the live system and during their migration to the new platform.

The most rewarding aspect of my role is when a customer provides great feedback for the people system or the service provided by my team which makes all our hard work and commitment worthwhile.

The Introduction of Real Time Information (RTI) into Payroll Processing

What is it?

The HMRC are introducing RTI to improve the operation of Pay as you Earn. Currently employers file tax information, national insurance contributions and other HMRC payroll deductions at the end of each tax year. HMRC are unable to correct mistakes until this information has been filed, resulting in many employees being on the incorrect tax code. RTI will be submitted electronically over the Internet via the Government Gateway. However, the HMRC's preferred option is to transmit the information through the banking system as most employees are paid by BACS. The information will be sent automatically to HMRC when the payment goes to BACS, the HMRC are in the process of finalizing the specification of the exact operation with the Banking Industry.

What are the benefits?

  • Under RTI, employers will inform HMRC of the above when the payments are made each pay period, which removes the need for end of year returns (P35, P14).
  • It will enable the HMRC to make more accurate PAYE deductions, and to pursue late payments more effectively.

When does it come into effect?

  • April 2012: 300 Employers are taking part in a pilot scheme for RTI, testing HMRC processes.
  • October 2012: HMRC will review the pilot scheme, and if all goes well, will encourage Payroll Bureaus / large employers to start using RTI post October 2012, however this is voluntary.
  • April 2013 and October 2013: HMRC will be confirming the date all other employers should start using RTI, with larger employers starting in April and smaller customers going live by October.

What are Fourth doing in preparation for the introduction of RTI?

  • We will be developing our software for RTI compliance and will have completed this work by the end of October 2012. Assuming there is confirmation from the HMRC that the pilot was a success, and therefore there are no major changes to be made we will then be ready.
  • Once the process for RTI has been tested and approved, we will write to all customers again on how the process will work within the people system.
  • To date Fourth software developers have attended the HMRC introductory meetings and are receiving updates regarding development specifications in order that the scoping can begin in due course.
  • Fourth will then encourage our customers to start using RTI before their mandatory dates with the intention of having all customers using RTI by April 2013.

Keep up to date on the HMRC's progress on introducing RTI by visiting www.hmrc.gov.uk/rti.
